Filming at Rough Trade

The first scene in our music video is when both characters meet for the first time. This was filmed at the record store, Rough Trade. We contacted the manager of the shop to get filming permission (email shown here). We got permission to film inside but didn't know that we also needed permission from someone else to film outside. So we rushed the first shots where "Kelly" is shown walking in because we were told that outside of the shop is private property so when the woman walked away we quickly filmed then moved on.

This would have been a problem as it is the first time that we see Kelly and shows the shop that they meet in. However because the shot was straightforward and easy to frame everything worked out.

Filming inside the shop was fine as we got there early and there were not much people walking around. The manager made clear that they wouldn't turn the music down int he shop, which wasn't a problem because the shot didn't need any diegetic sound anyway. So in conclusion filming the Rough Trade scene was sucessful despite the hiccup in the beginning.

Intertextuality

(500) Days Of Summer

We used intertextuality in our music video. We related it to the film (500) Days Of Summer in the sense that we played with the narrative order like they have in the film. They use narrative elipses and jump backwards and forwards in time. We jump forward but not backwards as we don't have enough time to risk confusing our audience. We found the exact same typography used in the film and edited it to look as if it was a timer that flicks forward.

This was useful for us as it was an explanation as to why so many things were happening on what -without the elipses - would look like the same day. Also an unexpected change in our performers appearance would have been seen as a continuity error if not for the day changes to provide some explanation.

Also in (500) Days Of Summer there is a role reversal as we would typically expect the female to be the one obsessed with the male who dominates the relationship whereas this is not the case in the film and in our music video the female shows little to no interest in the male.

Final Digipak Design

This is the final design for our Digipak. We use a font call Harabara, the reason we choose this because we want to create a simply straight forward idea to the audience, so the letter is easy to read. the far right top conner, we change the image to a stencil of the artist, by using white, grey and black, to link to the shadow with the image at the far left conner and the genre of the music which link to the main song 'Do you call this love?' which is a sad song, to create a moody feeling.
For the CD design I change it to a black background therefore the letter can stand out to the audiences and this design is more like a common CD design we see in the market.

Update Digipak design

First Production Studio Footage

This is our first footage for our Music Video, is a scene of our artist practicing in a studio, all the footage that we film we did not use it in our final Music Video, the reason because of the lighting in the room, is direct in to the camera, because of space wise we could not get a straight forward of his face, and there is too many wire in the room, which lid to bad framing.

Re-Shooting Digipak

The first draft of our digipak was made using the photos our artist already had taken by a friend of his and also someone we know. We had edited it and put it in our digipak and everything was fine and we met the deadline. Then all of a sudden we were told that we can't take pictures off of myspace eventhough our digipak passed the previous checks and was given the (hypothetical) thumbs up.

So because of this we had to go out with our artist and reshoot all the pictures. WE did this in Camden and tried to immitate the old pictures as much as we could because we already had an idea on what to do with them and how to edit them, it was just inconvenient to have to redo everything last minute.

We used the trip to Camden as an advantage as shot the music video performance at the same time as we can only get ahold of our artist for filming once a week because of his busy schedule. Although we were set back by having to re-edit everything worked out as we met our final deadline.

Characters/Casting changing

First Characters Casting

Sophie Miller / Latifu Mumuni

In our Music Video, we want to cast characters which can act, committing, timekeeping etc, therefore our timing schedule can keep up to date. But for some personal reason actors above, they can't commit to the filming, we decide to change other characters for our Music video.

Final Characters Casting

Sidney Abioye / Sin U Chang

For the final characters casting, we decided one of us will participate in the acting, this will be a advantage for us, is because we can commit to all the filming. And for the Male character we use Sidney Abioye, we cast him as our actor because he study Drama and have a free timing schedule.

Jake

Jake Wynne, a director of both music videos, commercials and short films came in. We presented our ideas for our music videos and received feedback and recommendations for improvement. We told him or general idea and showed him our animaniac (posted on this blog). He generally liked the idea however we were going to have a twist at the end of our narrative showing the female character possibly liking him and we were also going to play the narrative in a non linear way, jumping backwards and forwards in time. Jake recommended that we either have the twist at the end or play with the narrative. Because there was a lot going on in the video already he said to pick one of them.

We have yet to decide which one we will go with however we will most probably film the twist and in post production devise two alternate versions. One with the twist and one told in a non-linear way and have audience feedback decide which version works best.

He also said a way of making videos look professional without a professional camera is to change the lighting to reduce blurring, however when we were filming our artist we had tried it but it didn't seem to work, so we will be sticking to our usual way of filming. Although we did discover new techniques with the camera such as changing the settings and switching to night mode, which in the light looks like a black and white effect which we can use for our music video as it would fit into our black and white theme for the album.

Jake has directed music videos for celebrities such as Geri Halliwell, Stereophonics and SFA. He has made commercials for nike and has a short film called "DiD" about mental illnesses and split personalities. He has a youtube channel and his own website
